Frequently Asked Questions

Can't find an answer? Call us FREE on 0800 654 6934 or email bookings@homefocusopticians.co.uk and we'll be happy to help.

Is the home eye test really free?
Yes. If you qualify for an NHS-funded home eye test, there is no cost for the eye test itself. NHS optical vouchers may also help cover the cost of glasses if you're eligible.
Who Qualifies for a Home Eye Test?
You may qualify if you are unable to leave home unaccompanied because of a physical or mental illness or disability, or if you live in a care home or assisted living. Call us and we'll check eligibility for you — or visit our Eligibility page for full details.
How long does the visit take?
A typical visit takes around 30–45 minutes. We never rush — we work at a pace that suits you.
Will you bring glasses to try?
Yes. We bring a wide selection of frames so you can choose and try them on at home. If you need new glasses we'll dispense and deliver them to your door.
Can a family member or carer be present?
Absolutely. We encourage a family member, carer or care home staff member to be present, especially for patients with dementia or memory difficulties.
Are your Optometrists qualified?
Yes. All our Optometrists are fully qualified, GOC-registered (General Optical Council) and DBS-checked.
Which Areas Do You Cover?
We provide FREE NHS home eye tests across England. As a national service, we cover a wide range of areas — get in touch and we will let you know straight away. Call us on 0800 654 6934 or email bookings@homefocusopticians.co.uk.
What Happens If I Need a Referral to a Hospital or Specialist?
If our Optometrist identifies anything during your eye test that requires further investigation, we will arrange an onward referral to your GP or the appropriate hospital eye service on your behalf. We handle this directly, so you don't have to worry about it.
Can I Get Varifocals or Bifocals Dispensed at Home?
Yes. We can dispense varifocals, bifocals and single vision lenses — all fitted and delivered to your door. Our Optometrist will advise which lens type is most suitable for your needs during the visit.
How Do I Pay for Glasses If I Am Not Fully NHS-Funded?
If you are not eligible for a full NHS optical voucher, we will always advise you clearly of any costs before any order is placed. We offer a range of frames and lenses to suit different budgets and will never pressure you into a purchase.
How Often Can I Have an NHS Home Eye Test?
Most patients are entitled to an NHS-funded eye test every two years. However, if you have certain conditions such as glaucoma or diabetes, you may be eligible for more frequent tests. We will advise you on this during your visit.
What If I Need to Cancel or Rearrange My Appointment?
No problem at all. Simply call us on 0800 654 6934 or email bookings@homefocusopticians.co.uk and we will rearrange at a time that suits you. We just ask for as much notice as possible so we can offer the slot to another patient.
What Infection Control Measures Do You Follow?
All equipment is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between every visit. Our Optometrists carry and use appropriate PPE in line with NHS and College of Optometrists guidelines to ensure every visit is safe for both patient and clinician.
Can I Use My Existing Frames and Just Get New Lenses?
In most cases yes, we offer a reglazing service where new lenses are fitted into your existing frames. Please note this is carried out at the patient's own risk as there is always a small possibility of frame damage during the process, particularly with older frames. We take every precaution and will advise you beforehand if we have any concerns.
How Do I Make a Complaint?
We always strive to provide the highest standard of care. If you are unhappy with any aspect of our service, please contact us directly on 0800 654 6934 or at admin@homefocusopticians.co.uk. All complaints are handled promptly and in line with General Optical Council (GOC) guidelines.
Is My Personal Information Kept Safe?
Yes. All patient information is stored securely in line with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. We only collect information necessary for your care and never share it with third parties without your consent, except where required by law or for medical referral purposes.
