Common Questions

Home eye tests — your questions answered

What is a mobile optician?

A mobile optician (sometimes called a domiciliary or home-visiting optician) is a fully qualified Optometrist who travels to you instead of you coming to a high-street branch. We bring portable hospital-grade testing equipment and a selection of frames to your home or care setting, so you get the same standard of eye care without leaving the house.

Do opticians do home visits?

Yes. Home Focus Opticians is a fully registered domiciliary practice — our qualified Optometrists travel to you with portable hospital-grade equipment to carry out a complete eye examination in the comfort of your own home or care setting.

Who qualifies for a free NHS home eye test?

If you are unable to leave home unaccompanied because of a physical or mental illness or disability, the NHS covers the full cost of a home eye test. This includes most people aged 60+ with mobility difficulties, dementia, or long-term conditions, as well as residents of care and nursing homes. Use our eligibility checker if you're unsure — we'll confirm before any visit.

Which opticians do home visits for the elderly in my area?

We cover a wide area across the region for individual patients at home as well as residential, nursing and care homes. If you'd like to check whether we visit your postcode, send us a message or call — we'll confirm the same day.

Do opticians visit care homes?

Yes. We work with care homes and nursing homes to test multiple residents in a single visit. Staff don't need to arrange transport or accompany residents to a high-street branch — we bring the equipment, the frames and the aftercare to you, and share clear written reports with the home and the resident's family or GP.

Do Boots, Asda or Tesco opticians do home visits?

Some national chains offer a domiciliary service in selected areas. Home Focus Opticians is an independent specialist domiciliary practice — that means home visits are all we do, not an add-on. You see the same friendly Optometrist where possible, with unhurried 30–45 minute appointments designed around older and less-mobile patients.

How long does a home eye test take?

Plan for around 30–45 minutes. We never rush — we work at your pace, explain everything as we go and are experienced with patients living with dementia, sensory needs or mobility difficulties.
